水引は、和紙をこより状にし、よりが緩まないように水糊を引いて固めています。諸説ありますが、これが水引の語源ともいわれています。水引きの文化は、飛鳥時代からはじまったという説もあるとか。水引きは縁起物の象徴で、『邪気祓い』や『魔除け』の意味の他に『縁結び』の意味もあります。
